Now she’s back with a new collection, the story behind her inspiration and a small hint of the next in the series!
My recent series of work ‘The Toys are Back in Town’ combine toys from my childhood with Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The Northern Quarter is a very special place to me, I see it as a playground for grownups! The quirky bars, shops and galleries sit amongst beautiful street art and vibrant colours which showcase thoughts and feelings of Mancunians. The colourful setting inspired this series as a way to combine childhood and adulthood with toys replacing humans. In order to get shots of the streets I had to visit in quieter times as the Quarter is usually a hive of activity.
So far, I have completed the first two pieces of the series. Original drawings are layered with photographs I have taken of the Northern Quarter. I then paint over the layers and re scan to add depth to the pieces. The two pieces above are entitles ‘Robots’ and ‘Rambling Through the Avenues of Time’. The titles of the pieces are inspired by songs from the TV show ‘Flight of the Conchords’ and the third piece will feature characters from Star Wars.
