The Single’s Guide To Paris

Who says that the romantic capital of France is a couples only trip? Why is the gorgeous city of Paris only seen as a place you should go to with your significant other half? I mean I’ve been there twice, once with my mum, once with my travel buddies and I can assure you I did not think once “awww I wish I had my boyfriend here instead of my girlfriends” …Pffft no, we were having far too much fun!

tower.jpg

Don’t get me wrong, Paris is spilling with cliche proposal spots, cringe worthy romantic gestures and intimate little restaurants where you can eat frogs legs and stare in to each others eyes longingly *gag*. But Paris is also not short of activities to do for the single guy or gal! Hell in my opinion it’s a city that’s perfect for a lads or girls weekend away, but it tends to be over shown by it’s romanticised image.

So, in the spirit of Valentines day and for the sake of us not crying over the fact we don’t have a ‘bae’ to brag about on our social media like the rest of the internet… “Luckiest boy to have her” “I have the best boyfriend in the world” “been spoiled so much by this one”. Yeah we see you, and we’re not jealous AT ALL *cough maybe a little* but we’re off to book the next flight to Paris to enjoy a relationship free weekend, yeah watch us.

A guide to Paris… let’s say for the independent:

1: First topic, Alcohol…

Hello? You’re in the country that invented the devil’s juice that is wine, drink up, hit some bars and for goodness sake DO NOT text your ex, it will only give he/she pleasure. The last time I was in the city I got the chance to hang out with some Parisian uni students and long story short, the night didn’t finish until 6 am and when I left the night was still going! Before you leave for your trip, research student hangs within the city of Paris cause I can assure you you’re going to have a lot more fun there than hanging out with your fellow visitors.

2: Time to get touristy…

Okay, I’m sorry but see climbing up the Eiffel Tower, it’s the least romantic thing ever! It’s crowded, it’s sweaty, there’s a high chance you may get pick pocketed but wowwww the view is simply amazing… It’s also one of those things you just need to tick off your bucket list, so I do encourage. When I went with my mum it was really nice to do all the traditional touristy stuff because we both wanted to actually spend some time soaking up the culture and there was no arguments over “I’m bored” “I’m hungry” or “I want to leave”.

3: Who isn’t a complete foodie…

Picture this, sitting at a gorgeous little cafe on the streets of Paris watching the world go by… while stuffing your face with French food and gossiping about the night before with your group of friends, doesn’t get much better than that. French people are foodies and their cuisine reflects this, I can tell you that there is nothing better than a fresh baguette from the boulangerie and accompany that with one of France’s finest cheeses and you will be one happy camper. Got a sweet tooth you say? No problem, macaroons and creme brûlée are always a post dinner option. YUM!

4: Tinder

I mean you’re single, in the city of love right? Absolutely no harm in checking out the talent the city has to offer. Be it just for having a little flirt over text or landing yourself a cheeky wine and dine, tinder always provides some first class entertainment! Go wild, find yourself your very own Pierre but always remember to be safe… same rules apply back home y’know. I mean, having your first date in Paris is one to tell the grand kids I guess…

So there you have it. Paris for the singleton.

Happy Valentines Day!

Tips To Save Your Ass From Overspending

Whatever age you are and whatever amount of money you earn there is always something that you feel like you have to get… and how many times have you said to yourself: “Fuck it we only live once, I’m going to pay for this!”. Yes, too many, I know same here.

The-Cold-day-at-College-12

I am one of those people as well who said that above quoted sentence and I love to see my money hanging in my already full closet. I never say I have nothing to wear, I usually don’t know what to wear and I always still have something that I need and I can’t live without just to make that “I don’t know what to wear” harder.

So when I cleaned my closet I found so many clothes that I got, wore at least twice and never wore again. There are always clothes you will buy and not wear enough times and there will always be clothes you buy to update your wardrobe, which is fair enough. But you also want to be sensible, save money and get the most important things so you won’t have an overflowing wardrobe, but you will always have something to wear.

IMG_1459.jpg

To prevent overspending, too much clothes (it’s never enough of them, but let’s admit there is always too much of them) and to focus on the most important pieces here is a list I used sometimes in 2017 but I will 100% stick to in 2018:

  1. Think what you need and only buy that. Make a list!

Need a new pair of black shoes? Get one for a fair price that won’t go damaged after 2 night outs and you can easily clean and wear with anything. Think about colours, fabrics and patterns that you can wear with more than one outfit. They are the most useful pieces of your wardrobe. Don’t buy something just for one outfit, everything in your wardrobe has to be functional and useful.

  1. Think about basics. List them again!

We all need black/white/striped/etc t-shirts, black/blue jeans and all this basic stuff. It’s not a bad thing focusing either only on these, or having these (for a fair price again) and adding some “extras” that will keep the basic interesting.

  1. Don’t spend too much on those “extras”

First of all I hate when people get outfits for one and one occasion only. I have ball gowns as well that I only wore twice at least, but I got them because I saw the possibility of remaking them to short dresses for any occasion. Smart isn’t it? But if you can’t do that, before you go to any occasions, look through your wardrobe, and don’t be afraid to wear the same outfits again. Or be creative and wear something you would never wear but are two interesting pieces from your wardrobe. Experiment! It’s fashion, it’s creativity, it’s fun and this is how you save money.

  1. Sustainable fashion is a good thing. It’s unique.

So before you go for a clothes shopping obviously with your list of what do you need, check out second-hand and charity shops. Oh and vintage is a good idea as well, however I understand is you are not one of those people who are happy to wear old or used clothes. By the way in charity shops everything you can find is in a wearable conditions just for a cheaper price and you will definitely find things the previous owner forgot about and never wore. They only have one of everything so whatever you get, you won’t see it coming in front of you on the streets.

  1. Pay more for better quality once

Some people don’t like second-hand which is understandable, it’s not something everyone has to like. But if you have some money to spend and you are getting all the basic and the most useful stuff you need in your wardrobe to keep ready for any occasion, don’t worry about spending money on something a little more expensive. I know you can get a white t-shirt in some shops for £3, but that will last for exactly that long. When you get something think about how many times you will wear it and think how much it would per wear. That’s why you should spend more on basics and less on extras. Problem solved.

  1. Keep an eye out for sales and discounts! They save lives! And money.

Yes, some places offer discounts for students, people who work in the same building or there are seasonal offers on selected lines, or SALES! How much we love sales, don’t we? Just one thing about: just because it’s on sale and it’s beautiful and you can get it cheaper, if you don’t need it DON’T PAY FOR IT! It’s going to be useless or you will only wear it once and even if you got it for 30% off, it’s a huge price to pay for something useless. Imagine if you paid for a large pizza and you only got the box with only half a pizza in it! That won’t help your hanger, and it is not worth the price!

This is the mission impossible for some of us, isn’t it? Holding it back, getting exactly what we need and not everything we want. But on the long term it’s the best thing you can do for the perfect wardrobe that will always have something for you to wear and you will always be unique. Plus your bank card will love you for ever for not ruining that little chip on it before the expire date!

The Mothman Prophecies

unnamed-1.jpg

On November 15, 1966, in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, USA, a young couple, Scarberry and Mallette were harassed by two strange red eyes, similar to those of an insect, while they were walking to their car, near an abandoned explosives factory.

After a few minutes, they realized that a giant human figure two meters tall, gray and with two huge wings, was watching them. The strange stalker, in an instant, spread his wings and began to chase the young couple’s car, which accelerated rapidly, towards the town. That same month of November, the strange being appeared more times to many neighbors at Point Pleasant, reason why the local press soon informed on the strange events, baptizing to the strange creature as “the mothman”.

One month later, on December 15, a terrible event occurred, which caused the entire town to forget the strange being: the Silver Bridge, the Point Pleasant bridge, which crossed the Ohio River, suddenly collapsed. 46 people died.

John Alva Keel (March 25, 1930, Hornell, NY – July 3, 2009, NY), better known as John Keel, was a writer, journalist and paranormal researcher, who was convinced that this fateful event it was related to the strange apparitions of the “mothman”.

Keel continued investigating this case, to finally publish an essay in 1975, titled The Mothman Prophecies, where he presented some theories about revolutionary paranormal phenomena. There he introduced the famous “men in black”; strange characters, it is not known whether humans or not, always dressed in black, behaving strangely, and often persuaded the witnesses of the “mothman” or UFO sightings, so they do not tell anyone anything.

The Mothman Prophecies was his most famous book (in 2002, the film director Mark Pellington, premiered a film with the same title, starring Richard Gere), and signified the confirmation of his general theory about the paranormal world, which he already suggested in an earlier essay, titled Operation Trojan Horse (1970).

For John Keel, the strange “mothman” was not an extraterrestrial being, but rather a creature “from within the earth”, very similar to the monsters, goblins or devils of the ancient legends of the folklore of our civilization, which he tried to communicate with the inhabitants of Point Pleasant. In the same way, the explanation of the sightings of flying saucers, would not be more than a current manifestation of the old magical beings of thousands of years ago, that are presented to us in different ways.

The conclusion that came from Keel, after a lifetime of paranormal research, was that we never get to understand the extraterrestrial UFO phenomenon, since it would be something like a fisherman who speaks to the fish that he has just caught. So, if ever, one of you witness a UFO sighting, or stumbles upon a strange being with insectoid features, do not be afraid. Just ask the question that Keel always asked himself: What do these people want from us?

New Year, New Trend!

I very rarely step out my comfort zone with makeup on myself, I’m a warm neutrals kinda gal. So if like me you’re a little scared when it comes to adding colour to your makeup this could be the perfect look for you!

olivia 1.jpg

Adding a pop of colour to your lower lash line or your water line is a very understated way of pulling it off whilst still keeping your look classy. On myself (pictured above) I’ve used a dark purple to really make my green eyes pop! And on one of my beautiful clients (pictured below) I’ve used a bright blue to emphasise her gorgeous ocean blue eyes.
