Demonologist for Hire

demonologist5

In a world where ghosts , ghouls and werewolves are part of everyday life, you phone a Demonologist to deal with any supernatural problems you have, just as you would a plumber. This is the story of one such Demonologist. A man who has devoted his life to battling any supernatural evil-doers, no matter what form they may take.  There are times when only he can help, and then there are times his meddling makes things worse.

Demonologist For Hire is a unique and exciting horror / comedy web series filmed in and around Scotland. Created by writer / actor Bryn Owen and directed by indie filmmaker Uisdean Murray the series aims to push the boundaries of the genre and create something fresh and new.

Bryn, Uisdean and actor Ronni Menzies-Stirling answered some questions for us about the series so if you want to know more, then keep reading!

For those who have not yet seen the series, can you give a short explanation of what to expect?

Bryn – Demonologist For Hire is a horror/comedy set in a world where the supernatural is totally mundane. Vampires, ghosts and ghouls are part of everyday life, but what happens if you have a problem with such a supernatural force? You can’t call the Police, so you’d call in a Demonologist to deal with the issue just as you would a plumber if you had a leak in your bathroom.

These are the adventures of one such Demonologist and the everyday nuisances, big and small, he has to deal with.

How was Demonologist For Hire born?

Bryn – I had wanted to do a web series for years but it needed to be the right idea. When it comes to a web series you either do something that will appeal to a potentially worldwide audience or a more local audience. We wanted an idea that would be set and shot in Glasgow but would appeal to a wider audience.

It’s always difficult to build an audience for any new project, never mind a web series, but the key is to have a concept that excites you and makes you want to roll up your sleeves and get stuck in when the going gets tough, which is often.

Though there’s a huge audience for the horror genre out there it can be hard to cut through the clutter and really connect to the people you’re trying to appeal to. At the end of the day all you can really do is produce the best content you can and hope that the audience eventually finds you.

Can you give us some information on the creative team behind the series and what the experience has been like?

Uisdean – The core creative team for Demonologist For Hire is myself (Director), Bryn Owen (Creator, Writer and Actor), Ronni Menzies-Stirling (Actor and Assistant Producer).  We have know each other since the early 2000’s and have worked together on the odd project here and there over the years.  Bryn approached myself and Ronni with the project last year and we both jumped at the opportunity and since the first episode we have had a fantastic time developing the series together and I look forward to where we go with it next.

Have there been any difficulties or hurdles in actioning your own series?

Uisdean – The toughest thing was making the series with next to no budget and with very few crew members but I believe our project shows what can be done when you utilise what you have in front of you.  I’ve written, produced and directed many micro budget independent films and music videos over the years and I’m also a proficient editor so I was able to bring all this experience to the project.

The first season in particular was made with very little expenditure.  For example the first episode was made with myself directing and camera, my brother Alasdair doing sound and the two actors Bryn Owen, also the creator and Ronni Menzies-Stirling, also assistant producer.  We also filmed outside a factory car park where I currently work and the actual factory interior was used for our third episode of series 1.

What can we expect from future episodes/projects?

Bryn – We’re well into production on our second series of ‘Demonologist’ and, schedule permitting, we’re hoping to produce six episodes for this new series.

We also have some smaller spin-off projects like Joe Caxee And His Haunted Taxi which features Ronni’s character Joe in short sixty second ‘adventures’ that are produced for social media.

Ultimately though we want the series to become a larger production and progress from a web series to an actual television series. We already have a half hour script for what would be a potential Demonologist For Hire television pilot for a series ideally for a broadcaster or streaming service but for that we’d need to partner with a producer to help us get to the next level.

All in all we’re building not just a web series but a whole universe of stories set in this world and, at the moment, we’re only just scratching the surface of what is possible.

What advice would you give to those looking to pursue similar creative career paths?

Uisdean – When I was young I used to borrow my Uncle’s camcorder and this was how I started to learn how to make movies.  Nowadays phones can do incredible things, there are so many tools available with relative ease so there’s no excuse not to start making something with what you have in front of you.  And if you can find a group of like minded individuals and learn to work as a team then there is potential to create something special.  I would also study the classic films and how they are put together.  With filmmaking you are always learning.

Ronni – I would say follow your heart – as cliché as that sounds, it’s really true. If acting is your true passion in life, then you need to pursue it. You need to be prepared to be skint for a while, until things start to happen for you! But never, ever give up. Also, don’t think that just because you have an agent, work is automatically going to come your way. You need to work hard at creating your own brand, and getting yourself out there.
