Due to large variety of adverts on skincare products, it can be very difficult knowing which ones are effective and which ones are a total waste of money. Then there’s also the wonder of ‘Has introducing all these products just made things worse? Is it better to use zero products, wear zero makeup and wash our face with classic soap and water?’
Previously suffering from pretty bad acne, especially in my early teens, I would have gone to any extent to get rid of it. I spent hours and hours at doctors’ appointments trying different creams and pills to clear up my skin and it really wasn’t much help. It’s frustrating as hell! I would dread going to parties because I felt so ugly, I didn’t want people to see me that way. As ridiculous as that sounds (it’s just skin after all) if you’ve experience bad acne, I’m sure you’ll know exactly what I mean. A positive mental attitude can help but some days you just need to know that there is hope of it going away forever.
So, here are some of the things I found that are actually worthwhile;
HIMALYAN CHARCOL FACE MASK
Genuinely the only face mask I’ve found that clears up spots. I love getting home after work or uni, running a bath and applying a face mask, it always makes me feel so chilled out and luxurious and it’s even BETTER if the facemask does more than make your skin feel soft. The Body Shop has always been one of my favourite skin care brands, not only because it’s cruelty free but also because their stuff really is fantastic. Especially the ‘Himalayan Charcoal Face Mask’ – it works wonders and feels great on your face. It also smells really earthy and natural which I love.
TEA TREE OIL
This is another great option, best used just before bed. However, pay attention to whether it’s pure or not because if it is then it’ll need to be diluted as it’s harsh on the skin. This is the perfect way to dry out spots but just make sure you are moisturizing alongside it or else you will become a raisin.
RED LIGHT THERAPY SUNBEDS
Although, of course, sunbeds are not the best for you (though they are a lot safer nowadays), it’s only fair to be totally honest and I do credit the for helping my acne. They actually really cleared up my eczema too. These are not regular sunbeds; the red lights boost the collagen in your skin which then heals it. Obviously, this method should not be used and abused but used on the rare occasion.
This option is really there for when you forget your skin care utensils at a sleepover or holiday or whatever. I will always be thankful to my Mum for giving me this piece of advice. Even though people will give you weird looks for walking about with toothpaste on your face, it will dry your spots up in times of need.
LEAVE BEHIND THE DAIRY
Although many people won’t want to hear this, cutting out dairy was the best thing I could’ve done for my skin. Seriously. I really wish I’d know just how effective this method was sooner because it would have saved me years of misery. I know it seems like a lot of effort but if your skin is really getting you down that much then I really recommend trying this, even for a couple of months to try it out. But seriously after you see the results, you’ll realise how worth it the sacrifice is.
Good luck everyone on your skin journeys. Try your best to go make-up free to let your skin breathe (I know this is a hard hard thing to do sometimes, but on your brave days do your best) and ALWAYS use a cleanser/toner at the end of the day… No matter how drunk you are!
